Child Safety Week is the Child Accident Prevention Trust’s flagship community education campaign, raising awareness of serious childhood accidents and how to prevent them. This year it runs from Monday 23 to Sunday 29 June, with the theme:

“Make a change. Make a difference”

Child Safety Week generates substantial media coverage for practical safety advice and – by providing free resources to community-based staff and organisations – acts as a catalyst for thousands of local safety activities and events, which reach millions of children and families UK-wide.

Child Safety Week 2008 is made possible through the generosity of our official supporters Bitrex®, Corgi Trust, Department of Health, Department for Transport, Electrical Safety Council, Scottish Government and Wi-Safe from FireAngel.

The impact of Child Safety Week 2007

Why Child Safety Week?

Accidents are one of the biggest childhood killers in the UK, with six children and young people dying every week. This is four times as many children as are killed by family abuse or neglect, and 12 times as many children as are killed by strangers.

Accidents also put more children in hospital than any other cause. Every week, over 2,000 children and young people are admitted to hospital because of their injuries. Many are left scarred for life or permanently disabled.

Children from less well-off families are particularly vulnerable – they are far more likely to be killed or admitted to hospital with serious injuries than their better-off counterparts.

However, many of these deaths and serious injuries can be prevented - and without wrapping children up in cotton wool. Child Safety Week helps people understand the real risks to children and the simple changes they can make to reduce those risks - so that children and young people can enjoy safer, healthier, more active lives.

Child Safety Week 2008

This year, Child Safety Week runs from Monday 23 to Sunday 29 June, with the theme:

“Make a change. Make a difference”

Our message is that even small changes in our everyday lives can make big differences to children’s safety. We’ll be asking families what changes they can make that will make the biggest difference to children and young people’s safety.

For a parent or grandparent, this could mean driving more slowly in areas where children are out playing, getting their gas boiler serviced, fitting safety equipment such as smoke alarms or moving household cleaners where a young child can’t reach them.

For a child or young person, this could mean stopping at the kerb rather than running straight across the road, taking on the weekly job of checking that the smoke alarms are working or remembering not to overload electrical sockets in their room.

If you are a parent, carer, child or young person, we hope that Child Safety Week 2008 helps you learn more about safety and stops an accident happening in your family. Please use the short-cuts below to find out more:

If you work with parents, carers, children or young people, we hope that Child Safety Week provides you with inspiration and resources to raise awareness of child accident prevention and run local activities and events.
